Number of fields within a workflow

I was told there is a limit of 1000 fields within a workflow. As workflows become more complex, it would be handy to see how close I am to that limit. Maybe at the top of the instances where triggers and actions are indicated. Just to make sure I do not inadvertently cross a limitation.
